Lindy Fralin Pickups – Blues Special Strat Replacements vs. Split Blade Strat Replacements

In this video, famed guitar pickup winder Lindy Fralin personally demonstrates a set of his Blues Special Strat replacement pickups against a set of his new Hum Canceling Split Blade Strat Replacements (Blues Output).

The new Split Blades are a fully hum-bucking replacement for Strat® style pickups with all the high-end clarity you expect from a traditional single coil. They are available in three outputs (Vintage, Blues and High Output) and two colors (white and black). All 3 sets come with a 10% stronger bridge.

This comparison is not scientific but it was recorded in a controlled environment with virtually no enhancement. The signal path for this demo was as follows:
Guitar, VVT Lindy Fralin model amp with 1/15″, SM57 mic’ed about 18″ off the grill cloth, RNC Compressor, Mackie XDR preamp, Apogee Duet, Logic Pro on a Macbook Pro. The signal was recorded dry although a very slight amount of compression was added to reduce clipping and a slight plate reverb was added in Logic Pro for spatial enhancement. Otherwise the sound you hear is the pure, unaltered sound of the pickups through the amp with the volume set on about “3″. Learn more about these pickups at www.fralinpickups.com

Strat w/ single neck pickup slide guitar demo

A quick demo of a pile of leftover parts and some linoleum floor tile that became a guitar. The plywood body is from a Memphis copy, the neck is from a Squier Affinity Tele and has a reshaped heel to fit the body, and the pickup is from an Epiphone SG, wired to a single 250k Alpha pot. The bridge is from a ‘92 Fender Strat with a full sized zinc block and random leftover saddles from another trem. It’s blocked with five springs and a piece of mahogany wedged behind the bridge. The guitar is stung with .012-.052 D’Addarios with a wound third and is tuned to open E with high action. I’m playing with a Dunlop 220 steel slide. The amp is a late 60’s Kustom K200-B6 solid state head plugged into a pair of Epiphone Valve Junior cabinets with a Boss OD-3 in front of it to get the dirt. I recorded this with the built in mic on my Macbook Pro since I didn’t have my audio interface with me…

P.S.- I found out about a week after making the pickguard for this that the floor tile I used might contain asbestos, so if you’re going to make a pickguard like this, use new vinyl floor tiles….

why would the bridge of a strat sit at an angle?

my 50th Anniversary American Made Fender Stratocaster’s bridge is sitting at about a 30 degree angle. I’m not sure why it’s doing this. Anyone know if this is a problem or how I can fix it

Not a problem, the bridge is just raised off the body surface at the rear to permit raising the pitch by lifting the tremolo arm. Where is a good place to buy a guitar body online?

I am looking to start a project guitar, but I’m having trouble finding a cheap guitar body. I’m not looking for a top-of-the line model, just something I can work on for learning purposes. (i.e. learn to repair electronics, tremolo, etc. I’m not particular on the body type, but I would prefer a Les Paul, Strat, or Tele-style body. Again, it doesn’t need to be a major brand, just something cheap to work on.

Strats are the cheapest parts and easiest to find. Not a lot of Tele parts on the market so they bring more. Even Squier Tele parts sell for a lot more than Squier Strat parts. Les Pauls are even harder to get parts. The upper grades of Les Paul have a set neck. Only the lower grades have a bolt on neck. Some of the Les Paul clones by other companies have bolt on necks. But Gibson and Epiphone parts bring quite a bit. The cheapest type of guitar to work with is the Strat.

When working with a Strat, I like to stick with bodies by Fender or Squier. Other brands are not the same dimensions and the same contours. With a Squier body, you know any Fender pickguard will fit. You may have to drill new holes for the 11 mounting screws. That is common. But a Fender pickguard will fit on a Squier body. That is not the case with many of the other brands. A Fender pickguard does not fit on the body unless you cut the pickguard to shape. Also the distance between the neck pocket and bridge is different on some brands so a Fender pickguard simply does not fit on those bodies. An example of that is Yamaha Strat clones. If you are working with Squier (import) body, you need a tremolo with 2 1/16th inch spacing. American Strats use 2 3/16ths. If you put an Fender American trem on a Squier body and neck, the strings are off the side of the neck.

You can get bodies from Warmonth, Mighty Mite and All Parts. The contours are not the same as Fender. Nice bodies, but not cheap. If you want a cheap body for a project, the Squier bodies are a good choice. Warmonth makes very good necks but are definitely not cheap. Mighty Mite makes decent necks, some where in quality comparable to Squier Standard and Fender Standard MIM.
